What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, non-intrusive, yet powerful holistic hands-on energy healing technique. The word “reiki” is derived from two Japanese words. The first “rei” meaning “universal,” and the second “ki,” meaning the life force energy flowing through all living things” and to which we are all connected. Reiki energy is used to balance and harmonize all aspects of person, body, mind, spirit and emotions.  In addition to the life force energy flowing within our bodies causing us to be energetic by nature,  both humans and animals are surrounded and bombarded by outside  energy everyday. Every cell in our body and every atom in the universe is in a constant state of vibration.

There are seven  basic Chakras  or energy centers within our body. The Chakras also correlate to various body parts and systems as well as, associated life aspects all of which can be impacted by any number of things that we encounter in our daily lives from environmental stressors, illness and emotional upsets to name a few. These negative impacts to both our bodies and our Chakras can cause  energy blockages, disruption or just cause us to operate at a lower, sluggish vibrational frequency. As Reiki is a very high, universal vibrational energy, it can flow into, over and through anything thus allowing it to work throughout the body wherever its energy is needed, in particular, clearing and balancing the Chakras. Once energy balance is restored, there is an opportunity for the body’s own natural healing ability to be stimulated and a person or animal has a greater potential to experience pain reduction, relaxation and overall increased physical and emotional balance and well-being.

Reiki for Animals

Animals are particularly responsive to Reiki energy and just as in humans, animals may experience imbalances on a physical, emotional and energetic level. Reiki sessions can be used to reduce stress in anxious animals and, similar to their human counterparts, animals have Chakras throughout their body. While working on your animal or pet, I will gently place may hands over each Chakra area to allow the energy to flow. Or, depending upon the animal and whether or not they will or can tolerate touch, I can “hover” my hands slightly above or near the area and the energy will flow appropriately. Also, similar to humans, once the energy imbalances or blockages in the animal are cleared, the animal’s body has an opportunity to engage in self-healing. Reiki can also help to strengthen the connection between the animal and its owner or caregiver and Reiki may serve to alleviate behavioral issues resulting from energy imbalances.

All Animal Reiki sessions are scheduled as a Reiki On! Session and provided on site where the animal resides. Animal Reiki On! may also be scheduled while an animal is under veterinary care. Providing Reiki to an animal in the comfort and security of his or her residence or current location is necessary and important so as not to add additional stress to the animal which could result from transporting the animal. Reiki is also performed wherever the animal is and where they are most comfortable without a need to confine or restrain the animal in any way. Remember, Reiki can flow from a distance without direct touch. As with humans, nothing is ever forced and the animal is in complete control of the session and if, for any reason they choose to stop, get up walk away, etc., the session will be ended until the next visit.

How Reiki Works and Its Benefits

A typical Reiki session is usually 60 minutes. During the session, you will lay (fully clothed) on a massage table. The Reiki practitioner gently places her or his hands on your body starting at your head and ending with your feet in a series of 12-15 hand positions, generally placed upon or hovering above the main 7 chakra areas of your body. You may feel warmth, slight tingling or a warming sensation at that location and you may even feel the sensation move throughout your body. That just means the universal energy is flowing through your body and going to where your body is most in need of receiving the energy. However, what each person experiences during a Reiki session is unique to the individual. Some may not feel anything at all—but the energy is still flowing and working. Most people report feeling extremely relaxed and calm following a session and many will, often times, fall asleep during the session. The energy does not come from the Reiki practitioner— it’s the universal life force energy flowing through the practitioner to you. There is no pain or discomfort associated with Reiki. Reiki always promotes balance, relaxation and can be an aid to healing. No pressure and no massage is being applied during a Reiki session.

While Reiki is not intended to diagnose or replace traditional medical, psychological or other therapeutic treatments, Reiki works as a complementary therapy in conjunction with traditional treatments. Reiki is a powerful, but gentle energy that offers a way of increasing an individual’s vibrational energy level while also providing a peaceful, calm and often deep state of relaxation which in turn, can support the overall well-being of the individual.

Some of the benefits may include:

  •  peaceful, deep relaxation
  • dissolving energy blockages and tension
  • supporting the well-being of the client who is receiving traditional medical treatments
  • supplying universal life-force energy to the body to help stimulate the body's own self-healing process
  • stimulating the body’s immune system
  • reducing or relieving pain
  • increasing the vibrational frequency and creating a positive impact on the overall physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state  of the individual
